Recently, I had the pleasure of talking to Tazmin (AKA Pixie Piercings) the resident piercer at Fortuna 13 Tattoo Studio. Taz gives an amazing insight into managing your own business as well as your studies and has been recognised globally for her skills.
Taz studies Graphic Design at university alongside her piercing work. It was incredible to hear how she built her brand and clientele whilst also managing the demands of student work.

Firstly, I saw that you got business of the year, that’s amazing! How did that feel?
That was crazy. I think for me, being here for 3 years, and building a business on my own it’s the feeling of yeah you’re doing it now. It’s actually been a year and a half of being technically fully self employed without having any other job. It’s the feeling of, you’re not failing.
I got my rook pierced with Pixie Piercings! Taz was so comforting and I was very happy with my experience!
How did they reach out to you for the award?
The award is based on the booking system that I use, they are newly built themselves and they’ve been around for a year now. I was one of their first people to join and I was back and forth giving them ideas on things. Across all of their customers that they have across all of the world I was nominated.
Congratulations! You mentioned that you’ve had another job. What did you do?
I used to have three jobs. I used to do this, I used to work in a petrol station in the mornings from about half 5 till 11, then I would come here and then I used to work in a bar in the evenings.
Do your studies work well with your business?
It definitely helps with the branding and business side of things. It covers a lot of the marketing, attraction of customers and how you can appeal through your branding. I do all my own branding and I’m actually coming up with a rebrand soon because I’m bored of what I’ve got currently aha.
I really wanted to succeed in this and I felt that I always wanted to go to uni and now I can actually fund myself with this business.
Here are some examples of Taz's self-made and very cohesive branding.
What is your favourite piercing to do?

Definitely a conch, I like that you can have multiple types of jewels in there and having something so simple gives it so much character.
A conch piercing can be seen on the piercing points poster that Taz also designed by herself.
Is it hard to balance student and work life?
100% I am even doing work in between my appointments today and I’ve got deadlines coming up at the end of this month. I don’t really have a lot of downtime but I do go to the gym a lot and I do aerial hoop.

Love the style!!!
