Me and my flatmates were sitting in the kitchen, each with a raging hangover and none of us were really in the mood to talk. That was, until I mentioned that I was struggling to get into reading since moving, even though it is normally one of my favourite hobbies. Immediately our conversation was sparked and our alcohol fueled silence was killed.
Sometimes I find clubbing a bit repetitive so some nights I like to just stay in. It made me feel like I was boring because of how crucial clubbing seems to student life. To find out that my friends liked the same books as me made me feel a lot more normal.
It even resulted in my roommate lending me the TikTok trending Red, White & Royal Blue (Casey McQuiston) which is something I’ve wanted to read for ages but just never got around to.
After often finding myself overwhelmed and anxious in the clubbing scene I’m so glad to have found a common interest with my roommates. It was also nice to know that I'm not alone in sometimes feeling overwhelmed in the crazy clubbing scene. Me and my flatmates have now planned to watch the movie adaptation of RW&B as well as going clubbing during the week.

Reading and talking about reading is a great way to find a balance between study, fun and relaxation. If you are a uni student who is struggling with the same overwhelming feelings as I am, then picking up a non-academic book and having a quiet sit down could be the key to a relaxing night. Who knows, it might be the difference between a silent hangover or a fun conversation with your roommates.
If you’re looking for a recommendation I would suggest Red, White & Royal Blue as a fast paced easy read. It’s full of romance, politics and secrets and is loved among all of my roommates. It has also been rated 4 stars on good reads.
